Earthquakes can be devastating, but with a seismic retrofit you can protect your home and family from the toll an earthquake may take on your house. For instance most homes that are not properly bolted may slide off of its foundation or in other cases where the wood framed walls that support the structure beneath the house (cripple walls) start to lean it can eventually cause the entire house to collapse especially in the event of an earthquake as seen in the picture to the right. This house unfortunately suffered catastrophic damage aside from falling off of its foundation and as you can imagine accompanied with serious injury and financial loss. This can be prevented by having a seismic retrofit upgrade done to your house. By adding plywood to the cripple walls underneath a home along with proper bracing and bolting, the house will remain in tact and on its foundation. When existing cripple walls have these three components they would be considered shear walls. However; some homes require more than just shear walls.
